Not a Lemon
Less clutter, inexpensive, & versatile - this is my second unit. Sony mega CD holders are necessary for anyone with a large collection. I suggest typing all your CD info in MS Excel and forego the task of entering the data in to the unit. Thus, you will never lose it and you can sort easier. Electronics always have lemons, mine was not, and you will see many reviews of folks who had one mixed in a batch of good ones. Please, never move the unit with any CDs in the case, you will damage it, crack, and scratch a few CDs. This is from an unfortunate moving experience so set it up in the place it will reside forever. Enjoy.
I guess you get what you pay for. I should have bought two Pioneer Elite PD-F27s!
I have two of these machines, purchased 1 year apart from each other. They are both linked and I am also having problems with it creating scratches around the edges of the discs from retrieving and return them to their slots. There also seem to be slight circular scratches forming in areas in the playing area of the disc, to the point where they finally are rejecteed and will not play. Luckily I have not put my originals in the machines, but copies made on TDK CDRs. I just ordered a 100 pack of Imation ForceField CDRs which supposedly have a anti-scratch coating on them. We shall see what happens. The GQ ‘Great Quality’ CDRs from Fry’s last about 6 months before they are no-longer usable from the random action of the changer.
A smaller problem with features which I discovered and Sony had no answer for. The timer switch does not memorize the Mega Control, X-fade or No-Delay functions. It also seems that the replacement model DVPCX995V DVD/CD combination player has no linking ablility to take advantage of the Mega Control feature on the CDP-CX455 CD changer.
The only answer to this I discovered is I must run them with the $140.00 Sony RM-AX4000A remote control and program it to operate the changers to turn on the units, activate the Mega Control function to link the two machines and start random play. Here we have it, Sony has either dropped the ball or it’s just a ploy to get you to spend more money on something which could have easily been done without?
So Far, So Good — Happy CX455 Owner
I haunted the web for a good month reading everything I could find about these mega-changers. I found epinions, audioreview, and Amazon to have the most useful reviews. I have a couple friends who have Sony mega-changers, but they do not live nearby so I couldn’t test their machines. I did trade a lot of e-mail and phone calls, though. It was interesting and re-assuring to learn that neither of them has had trouble with their Sonys, and both have had them for over 3 years.
I could not find much information about any of the changers Other than the Sony models, and few opportunities to buy them, so: I headed for Sony. Based on price, I ordered my factory-fresh CX455 from Amazon. My experience with Amazon — thus far limited just to taking my order and shipping it — has been perfect. I highly recommend Amazon. Completely hassle- and error-free.
You can get these cheaper on e-bay, but based on my reading I was afraid to order one without a warranty. As my experience with my new ‘455 unfolds, I might find myself shopping for a used one to add to my system. But, I’m still suspicious that the volume of Sony Mega-changers selling on e-bay means something bad.
I’ve had my CX455 for about a month. It worked perfectly right out of the box, and it’s still working. I say it that way because it’s readily apparent to anyone who can read that a fair number of folks have had issues with their Changers, some of them right out of the box. I’ve had no issues so far.
I struggled with my entertainment center to prepare it for the 23″ deep space this Sony requires (if you include space for the cables…which you Should). Also, I have developed a suspicion, more deeply held now that I’ve watched this thing work, that these changers require a level shelf. The manual clearly states not to tilt or prop this unit up, but I think ‘not propping it’ is insufficient. Give it a Perfectly level shelf to work on.
I have Not used the software — the ability to name and categorize disks — yet, and I may not, Ever. This is the very least interesting part of the changer, as far as I’m concerned. I had my Cds in their cases, in a rack, alphabetically. As I loaded them into the 455, I wrote them down. I later transcribed my writing to an Excel file and printed a nicely formatted list in both alpha and slot-number order. I may someday assign certain CDs to groups, so that during a dinner party I can play a bunch of jazz music, perhaps, but basically, I find the whole naming and sorting thing foolish. I figure I can make it to the living room every 40 minutes to change a CD if I have to. I’m not running a radio station here.
As others have said, it Does help you rediscover disks you have not listened to in a while. And between loading and listening, it might help you cull your collection a bit, too.
My changer says it was manufactured in April of 2007 (sticker on the back). It replaces an older single-disk Sony (CDP-XA-something or other) in my system. I’m guessing the old unit was built in ‘98 or ‘99. I was prepared not to like the sound of the cx455 however… wow! This silly thing ain’t bad! The bass is Much better than my previous deck. I won’t get all flowery with audiophile lingo but, Yes, if you are using an older and average CD player, the output of this unit will probably be a pleasing surprise.
I will probably opt to buy a coverage plan for this, going back to my fear that it might be fragile, and I think I will eventually get an additional unit, as well, for the rest of my CDs. I think what I will do, though, is buy a Beresford DAC, connect each changer’s toslink to the DAC, and listen to my music That way, rather than link the two changers to take advantage of cross fading and random play. Probably not a common method of use.
All in all, I Do recommend this unit. Good luck in Your shopping!
Great product if you have multiple CDs
This unit works as advertised. Like most, we have hundreds of CDs and having them all in one place and accessible is great. I can see how people chain them together when they have even more CDs. Definitely recommend.
Mega storage cd changer
1st., The things I like about this CD player: It holds 400 CD’s, so I can have easy access to all the CD’s, some I haven’t played for some time: You can play all the CD’s by the same artist with the touch of a button: On all disks shuffle, the unit plays continously: A great storage unit.
2nd. The things I don’t like about this unit: You have to enter all the disk info my hand including the name of the album and the artist, using the jog, it takes for ever, using the computer keyboard helps but it is still a project. For the 400 hundred CD’s, which I have, probably took me between 15 and 20 hours to enter the info. If you don’t use the unit for a month, all the info is deleted, I can’t imagine having to through all the time and effort to re-enter the info again.
3rd. Would I purchase this unit again, probably not, for the reasons stated above.
