Amazon.com Product Description
Enjoy big, immersive surround sound from your favorite movies and music while keeping your components compact with the SONY DAV-X1 dream system, which features a multi-format, single-disc DVD player/amplifier and 2.1-channel speaker system. The S-Master digital amplifier processes audio signals from your HDTV broadcast, DVD, Super Audio-CD, or other digital source, with signal processing and amplification executed entirely in the digital domain with no analog steps–resulting in clear, accurate sound reproduction. It also includes a digital AM/FM radio tuner with 30 total presets (10 AM, 20 FM).
The DVD player is compatible with DVD movie, standard CD, CD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW (and Dual Layer DVD+R), DVD-R/RW, and Video CD discs. This system also offers SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc) playback for high-resolution audio that carries a one-bit Direct Stream Digital signal, recorded at a phenomenal 2.8224 MHz sampling rate. SACD supports both stereo and multi-channel music reproduction.
Sony’s S-Force Pro 2.1 surround sound technology emulates a three-dimensional surround sound field by using advanced signal processing and sound wave phasing, while the omnidirectional subwoofer handles the low-frequency effects. The result is full immersive surround sound with fewer wires, and less speakers than some surround systems. The digital direct twin drive subwoofer delivers a much more powerful and uniform bass sound that exceeds most passive or active subwoofer systems. The speakers are specially designed with two unique drivers in each, which are fed by multiple discrete channels, helping to create an immediate, “out of box” surround sound experience. The DAV-X1 provides built-in Dolby Digital, DTS, and Pro Logic II surround decoding for playback through two speakers and subwoofer).
Other features include A/V Sync (Lip Sync), which allows for adjustment of the audio/video parameter for perfect simultaneous playback of sound and image, and a Remote Commander control that can be programmed to handle components from other brands. It features the following audio/video connections:
Tech Talk
HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface). It produces the sharpest possible image, the clearest audio, and the highest fidelity.
What’s in the Box
DVD player/receiver, subwoofer, remote control (with batteries), two satellite speakers, AM loop antenna, FM wire antenna, speaker cord, video cord, Setup disc, speaker pads, printed operating instructions and quick-start guide

Good Value–Good Sound
Not wanting wires, extra speakers, etc. I was deciding between a Bose 3-2-1 GSII system and the sony. Review and ratings of the Sony DAV-X1 were better. although I was leaning toward the Sony, I still asked the associate at Circuit City to turn on the Bose display to hear it one more time. He had to disconnect the power and reboot the system in order for it to operate. I indicated to him that problem had been mentioned in some of the reviews. He indicated that he has had to do that several times when asked to demonstrate the Bose.
I bought the Sony. It was fairly easy to install as I connected the Cable box and a new 50″ Sony HDTV. I used an HDMI cable and wired it so that the TV can still produce sound through its speakers since my wife doesn’t want to have to operate another remote to turn on the TV sound.
I’ve noticed that for watching TV, the best sound is provided by using both the TV internal speakers and the X1 at the same time. The internal spealers give a bass balance to the crispness of the X1 and allows “voice” when there is heavy background to be clearer than just with internal TV speakers. For DVD, the X1 is fine by itself so we just set the internal TV speakers to “0″ with the remote and enjoy the great sound from the X1.
I’m pleased with the Sony and have had no problems. I bought it for $499, half the cost of the Bose GSII and am very satisfied with it.
Good value
I just bought the Sony system and have been very happy with it. Having just bought a 40″ Sony Bravia and not being able to run wires throughout the family room, I started shopping for 2.1 systems. Most of the lower end systems (LG, Samsung) appeared very cheaply built and unimpressive. I compared both the Bose 3.2.1 and the Sony side by side, and couldn’t tell much of a difference. So I bought the Sony for half the price. The DVD player seems to work fine so far. The sound quality is very good–not excellent–but if you want better spend more money for a 7.1 system. The best things about this system for me are the compact design (the DVD player and speakers fit on the same shelf as my cable box), simple one wire hoook-up for the speakers, and confidence in the Sony brand name. Yeah, it is missing some things like base and treble control, headphone jack, and goofy subwoofer setting, but for the price and convenience I can overlook these minor flaws.
Great System at a Value Price
My wife and I decided it was time to upgrade to a 50 inch plasma and get a new theater sound system. Prior to the Sony system we had a 6 speaker Pioneer system purchased for $450 back in 2002. We were able to get the Sony system at Best Buy for $425. I wanted a smaller system with good sound because setting up a larger 6 speaker system and hiding wires was a real hassle. The Sony is very easy to setup unlike many larger systems. The HDMI DVD output to the plasma displays an excellent quality HD picture, and the sound is fantastic. It really brings out the intended sound for a DVD and provides a theater experience. We thought about getting a Bose 3 speaker system, but the price was $1000 and I don’t think the sound really could be much better.
A nightmare
Save yourself the headcahe, find another system. All movies I have tried to view on this sysyem have shut down midway. Thinking that all my movies (which continues to play on my other DVD players)are either dirty or scratched, I have bought new movies with the same annoying result. Too late for me to return this thing that I bought in 1/07.
very nice system
I retired my junky RCA 5.1 system for this excellent 2 channel system. The sound is incredible, but you may have to adjust the bass-it’s loud. The feature on the remote for the subwoofer is easy to use, but I find I need to adjust it for each movie I watch. So far, my only complaint. It is easy to set up and the simple design looks good on my gigantic Sony Wega T.V. I don’t have my T.V. running through this system because my Wega has built-in Tru-Surround speakers, but something tells me that the optimum sound will be for a DVD. The sound for a CD is a little weak, and will probably be the same for the T.V. I’m a big movie watcher, so I love this system, and since I got it on sale for $400.00, the few faults are easily excused.
