Product Description

Sony’s DVP-S530D is one of the better values in DVD players, especially for those seeking one with an onboard Dolby Digital decoder. It’s the step-up from Sony’s entry-level S330, but the nominal price difference nets you a barrel of valuable features. The S530D boasts component video outputs and 3-mode simulated surround. Because the S530D has an onboard Dolby Digital decoder, you can connect its 5.1-channel outputs to a Dolby Digital-ready receiver’s inputs. Sony includes built-in speaker setup controls for important parameters such as speaker size and distance from the sweet spot. The Digital Cinema Sound system allows you to compensate for non-ideal speaker placement or a complete lack of surround speakers. The S530D’s remote can control many brands of TVs. Other convenience features include automatic selection of the soundtrack with the highest number of channels, a screen saver, a bit rate indicator and a bit rate history display. It also has the smooth scan search feature.

BULLET PROOF 5
I just for the heck of it thought I’d take a look to see what people are rating this player…and was surprised it wasn’t 5 stars across the board. I have been using this player as my only dvd player for 7 or 8 years now, and I have NEVER had any issue with it. The thing is bullet proof - I need to upgrade as I just bought a new HDTV…but it will be going up to my son’s room…so we’ll see if he can manage to break it. Great job Sony!!

Still kicking! 5
We bought this DVD player when it first came out and continue to abuse it with weekend DVD marathons and such. It hasn’t left its spot in the entertainment center since the day we bought it as there has been no need for maintenance or repair. It provides a lot of options but isn’t overly complicated to operate. In my 25 years of experience with Sony products, they have consistently been outstanding in quality, durability, and reliability.

I am just another in the list of customers that spent big bucks for a product that never really worked. At this point in time, I have sent Sony customer service an e-mail and am curious to see what they say now that they have had numerous complaints and a few class action suits. If they just would take care of their customers in a reasonable manner, they would have a very loyal clientele. Since they no longer make this model, it is almost worthless to tell others not to buy it, but I think some models may still be out there. It seems as though some of the units built actually are OK, but I’m betting it is just a matter of time. There are several design flaws that can crop up and will given time. At first, I blamed my kids for the trouble, but I have since apologized to them. Bottom line: Be aware that Sony’s DVD players have a history of problems and it appears as though their customer service is lacking. If any of the products that my company manufactures behaved like these, we would replace them, no questions asked. I now classify myself as a ‘former’ Sony customer.

Flawless 5
Obviously there must have been an issue with a lot of the players that were made with this model #, but I haven’t seen it. I’ve had the player for 6 years + and never had one issue with it. its the first and only stand alone dvd player i’ve had and works wonderfully. I also own 2 sony tvs, a sony reciever and vcr and satellite system and haven’t once had an issue. I think that sony has continued their product quality no matter where they’re built.

Good for target practice! 1
Bought mine in 1999 and it worked flawlessly for the first year, then BAM, movies would freeze in the middle of the movie or skip and jump to another chapter, usu. backwards. Even after air and regular cleaning as advised it still did it. Then it stopped reading DVD’s. It would error and say “insert disc”. Stupid me did not listen to other’s complains about new Sony products nowadays and bought another Sony DVD player which did the same thing. All I can say is SOny is no longer what they once were. The quality is definitely gone! After all, their products are made in China now instead of Japan. Well as for this player, I took it with me on a shooting session as a target, and by God, this time it was flawless. Took every bullet into it and shattered into pieces. Now I have a smile on my face!
