Great DVD Player!
My university’s library has a bunch of these players in the media room for personal viewing. What I like about this player so much is that it looks sleek, and willing to play your movies! You can navigate DVD menus without a remote - just use the joystick-like control on the unit (easy to use, BTW). I’ve watched many movies on that machine (like “Airplane!,” “Back to the Future Trilogy,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Incredibles,” etc.) and watched a couple of movies in Spanish sound with English subtitles. Best of all, when the DVD changes layers on a dual-layered disc, it’s just a one-second pause - no “check for scratches” warning or anything! It’s too bad this player was pulled from production a few years ago but oh well.
Reads My DVD+R Discs Flawlessly….
Great dvd player for the price. We needed a basic DVD player for my children’s TV, a player that could also read DVD+R back-up discs & cd-rs (as well as deal with my children’s daily abuse).
The Sony has worked flawlessly. It plaus our Ridata DVD+R discs without a hithc. We have now owned the player for 6 months with no problems. The operation is simple; and the remote control is also easy to program and utilize. For anyone interested in a basic player at a good price, look no further than this unit.
kangaroo jumping dvd player.
we purchaced the sony DVP-NS300S dvd player on 10-1-2001. we had problems from day one. it would freeze at will and go back to the start of the dvd.we exchanged this unit for another and it is as bad.at around scene 13 or so it will freeze or go into pulpertations.we have tried dvds that are new out of the box to no avail. dont buy this model it is absolute pooh!
Unexciting
First off, when you turn the unit on, it is not really on. It requires at least another button press before it decides to turn “on”.
However, the worst aspect about this product is it takes forever for the tray to eject from a cold boot. For example, I click the power button. But the unit is not on, it is on “standby”. Then I click the eject button, and it takes an agonizingly long time for the tray to eject. This sort of defeats the purpose of even having DVDs. I mean, one of the great aspects of DVDs is to be able to quickly locate a favorite scene. I don’t want to have to fumble around with the hardware and WAIT while salivating about which scene I want to watch.
It plays DVDs ok, but so does my friends really cheap panasonic, which ejects much faster than this unit. You click the eject button and wham! there the DVD is ejecting.
I have to admit, we live in a world of buttons. You click a button, and something is supposed to happen. Sony seems to have subverted this logic because when you click a button on this product, NOTHING happens.
Lame.
The NS300 can actually read CD-R’s
I’m just writing to correct some information written by other reviewers… This DVD player does indeed read CD-R’s, I have verified it with burned VCD’s I have created. (But not SVCD)
I suppose wether or not it works may depend on the brand of CD-R media you are using, but at least the Sony CD-R’s media works flawlessly for me.
Overall this is a great player for the price. It’s easy to use, has great picture quality, and I have yet to find a DVD movie that it will freeze on. (Except when caused by disc scratches) I’m very satisfied.
