Amazon.com Product Description

This stylish, 2.1-channel computer speaker system from FPS (Flat Panel Speakers) consists of slender, perfectly flat left/right speakers in transparent acrylic casings and a stand-alone subwoofer with a 4.1-inch cone woofer. The sub houses the system’s 40-watt (total) amplifier, while the 2.5-inch deep, bidirectional speakers employ FPS’s patented MCMA (multi-cell microtransducer array) technology for clear, even sound with near-instantaneous transient response for crisp, lively audio from your MP3 files, CDs, DVDs, and other sources.

FPS speakers are multi-cell, perfectly flat speakers lined with multi-sound cells whose small individual sizes reduce, in FPS’s term, “howling.” With cone speakers, phase irregularities between the sound from the tweeters and the sound from the other driver(s) can “smear” the sound through random reinforcements and cancelations on the sound’s journey from the speakers to your ears; the speaker’s internal crossover circuit is critical.

With MCMA panels, however, no such crossover is necessary–sound waves constantly radiate outward from the across the entire surface of the flat panel membranes. The result is an almost omnidirectional effect, an evenness of level and sound dispersion throughout the room, not merely in a choice “sweet spot” in front of and between the left/right speakers.

The speakers offer high humidity resistance, heat resistance, and recyclable materials. Mount them on the walls or set them on your desk–the speakers’ bidirectionality offers a sense of spaciousness uncommon in standard cone-speaker setups.

Customer reviews

modern, rich and unexpected 5
This is the flat out the best-sounding 2.1 rig I’ve listened to anywhere. I just renovated my office at home with a clean wood and no cables look. I needed something that looked modern, took up little space, was not plastic, and sounded great. I’m happy these planar speakers take up so little real estate on my desk. The speakers and sub-woofer really deliver on female vocalists. There is none of the thin sound you get with so many computer speakers. This is a rich sound for the money and size… in fact, the FPS setup goes far beyond what I expected. Dido, Anna Moffo, Eva Cassidy and Senor Tonto, to name a few, just shine with the FPS 2.1 speaker system.

Not too bad for the price, but not as good as I had hoped 3
These are available as closeouts from both Amazon and Von Schweikert. VS is known for high end speakers, so with their recommendation on top of the reviews on Amazon, I got a pair. What the heck, at this price, right? Overall, the sound quality is about like the Klipsch 2.1 set, but a bit more annoying. I’ve heard many worse speakers for higher price tags, but I wouldn’t claim these are an incredible steal at ~$150 or so. The treble is exaggerated (particularly sibilant sounds in vocals), and the bass is quite muddy (even though it only goes down to 70Hz at -3dB, yet the subwoofer is still the weakest link in this set). It’s better than most cheap computer speakers, and it may be that with more time on placement I’d get better results. But listening to music through these gave me a headache, and I think I’ll return them. All in all, the sound of these was typical of a decent bookshelf stereo, nothing exceptional. Good imaging, though, which is typical of planar speakers. But I would not recommend these to my friends, so caveat emptor.

great looks, great sound 5
These speakers are awsome. I got one for my office and people could not stop looking at them. They look way more expensive than the are, and the “wow” factor is unbelievable. I am no speaker expert but the sound is clear, tight and rich. One downside is that the instruction manual looks kinda cheesy but who cares, the looks and sound more than make up for it. Get these and and you will love ‘em.

Sound and Design 5
The nicest pair of speakers I’ve had. It’s flat and thin. Doesn’t take up space. Sounds fantastic. Highly recommend.

Great, beautiful 4
But -1 for a company representative writing an obviously planted review with the same text twice. Come on, be honest, and say you’re an employee!

Meanwhile, yes, these speakers are wonderful. They look gorgeous (I have the wood not the acrylic), they take up a tiny amount of space, and the sound feels like it’s coming out of nowhere and filling the room. A friend has Altec-Lansing flat panels (in the $100 range), and was quite jealous to see and hear these guys, which were judged to be much clearer.

I listen mainly to classical, instrumental music, but they also shine when plugged in the back of the DVD player. On a desk where space is a premium, these really fit the bill.

One downside is the ultraterse haiku-like user manual, but there’s not too much to figure out. I think FPS is using these guys to get us hooked on their flat panels so we spring for the more expensive models when we’re grownups — in which case, good job!
