Stay in touch with all your IM and e-mail contacts without having to lug around a laptop wit h the lightweight, wireless Sony mylo Personal Communicator COM-1, which also offers multimedia play back and VOIP Internet telephony capabilities. The mylo COM-1 enables you to use Wi-Fi (802.11b) con nections found in your home, on your school campus, and at a variety hotspot locations to send e-mai l, chat across multiple IM conversations, and browse the Web. While it doesn’t communicate via cellu lar networks, you can use the built-in Skype VOIP (voice over IP) software to make phone calls over the Internet via the integrated microphone or the included external mic. This model comes in white w ith an orange keyboard, but it also comes in black with a gray keyboard.

The mylo COM-1 has 1 GB of flash memory, a 2.4-inch LCD display with a 320 x 240-pixel resolution (Q VGA), slide-out QWERTY keyboard that’s easy to operate, an embedded microphone and speaker, Memory S tick slot (PRO Duo) slot, and USB 2.0 port for connectivity to your PC and for charging the battery. The lithium-ion rechargeable battery provides up to 3.5 hours of Internet calling talk time, up to 7 hours web browsing, and up to 45 hours of music playback.

The What’s Up screen provides an at-a-glance overview of your circle of friends, showing who’s avail able for IM or Voice calling, and it displays what music is currently being played. You can easily c ontrol music playback without sliding open the keyboard using the handy music keys next to the LCD ( play/stop/rewind/forward).

Communication and Connectivity
Reach friends using three of the fastest-growing instant messaging services–Yahoo!, Google and Skyp e–and use the Info button on the mylo COM-1’s face to switch among multiple IM conversations. And w ith the built-in Skype software, you can enjoy free Internet phone calls to and from any Skype-enabl ed device, anywhere in the world (or SkypeOut to any phone number for a nominal fee.

Sony has partnered with Google’s GMail and Yahoo! to provide easy access to on-the-go email. The sli de-out QWERTY keyboard means you can type without the hassle of the repeated key-presses you’d need on the number keypad of a typical mobile device. The mylo COM-1 also enables you to browse virtually any Web site (via the built-in Opera browser)–allowing you to scroll horizontally and vertically t hrough the page, fit to the QVGA width of the screen, zoom in to display web pages at full resolutio n, or zoom out to fit pages to the width of the screen. Mylo communicator’s Web browser renders ful l HTML–not truncated WAP pages like browsers found on many cell phones and portable internet device s.

Multimedia
In addition to powerful communication features, the mylo COM-1 also provides a wide variety of digit al audio, video, and photo playback. Offering compatibility with MP3, WMA (Secured and Un-Secured) a nd ATRAC formats, you’ll be able to play music you’ve purchased from many online music stores. You’l l also be able to watch MPEG4 video transferred to an optional Memory Stick Duo or saved to the 1 GB memory after processing on your PC using the optional Image Converter 2 software. You can also down load and view hundreds of JPEG pictures from the Internet or from your digital camera. Transfer is e asy using the supplied Mylo Image Transfer software, via drag and drop from your PC desktop, or onto saved to an optional Memory Stick Duo media card.

You can also connect to other nearby mylo COM-1 devices using a device-to-device ad-hoc network, ena bling you to listen to streaming music and transfer data files wirelessly.

Note About Connectivity
The mylo Personal Communicator COM-1 requires a compatible wireless LAN access point to use the inte ractive IM, email, and Web features. How ever, some access points and features may rely on Internet services which may require a fee.

Great Little Device
This is a wonderful device for the average college student. Alright so:

pros-

1) It’s got wireless internet (some people have said it may not work on college campuses due to lack of the authentication support but it does work at my campus (with that type of authentication) and I have a few friends with these devices that go to other colleges and it works well there also).

2) Its got messanging services (google talk does run AIM)

3) Its got a text program (essential for taking notes in class)

4) The latest firmware seems to have fixed the wireless connectivity problems (some people were having to try to connect 2-3 times before it actually connected - I have only had to try to connect once).

5) The keyboard is spacious enough to allow for easy typing via thumbs - with a little practice you can get some decent words-per-minute counts

6) It works as a PMP (portable media player) meaning you can play mp3s, video, look at photos

7) It has a killer battery life…even if you are looking for just an mp3 player you should look at this device. It takes only 1.5 hours to 2 hours to fully charge and the battery for mp3s lasts somewhere around 35 hours (which is steller) although you can stretch that longer depending on what setting you have it on.

The resolution for video and photos is steller. I think the resolution is better than my cheap lenovo N100 XP laptop.

Cons -

1) The internet browser leaves a bit to be desired. If you view pages at normal size you can easily scroll and skip around using the orange “nub” but you will not be able to see the entire page all at once. If you use the “fit to screen” mode you get quashed html so the text is a bit distorted from where it is supposed to be. However, I’ve just learned that there is a zoom function under “tools” so I’ll have to check that out.

2) The case it comes with sucks. It is good at protecting the device and rather cushy but not at all stylish. You’d expect something more from Sony (the company obsessed with style). I’ll probably end up buying a “bean” case from a 3rd party seller - The sony case is just too ugly for me to carry around

3) The maximum size memory stick pro duo you can add is 4 GB. This leaves the device with only 5 GB storage. However, the movie format drastically reduces the size of the movies (Image converter is not included for some reason - but if you own a sony computer it comes with the computer) and honestly most of us listen only to our favorite songs which never comprise more than a couple of GBs of space.

Sony Mylo
The Sony Mylo is delightful, with great graphics and surprisingly good sound, even without headphones or external speaker. My only disappointment is that it will not play video without purchasing optional video software.

amazing!
This little gadget is amazing and there is nothing out there that can compare. Yes there are tablets, but they don’t have a keyboard. This is designed for instant messaging and music and it does that beautifully. If you want an internet tablet then go buy one, this is not your machine. I would give this a 5 out of 5 any day. AMAZING!

Better thn IPOD Awesome!!
it does everything i bought it for.

Skype, email, chatting, music, videos.

The sound quality is better than an IPOD. the screen is bright and good quality. the sound is amazingly good. I use it on the streets for instant connection to the internet, Myspace, Facebook, Gmail, Skype.

I saved over $1000 in phonebills, and internet bills. and saved myself a lot of boredom at airports, hotels, coffee-shops, barber shops, malls, etc.

would recommend to anybody anyday.
